Karen Burniston February 2023 Blog Hop

Welcome to our Karen Burniston Products - KB Riley LLC February Release Blog Hop. The Design Team (plus me!) have come together today for a fun blog hop to celebrate the release of 6 new dies. Sneak peeks of the new release started last week, and the dies are available to order NOW!

 

This small but mighty release hits all of our die categories, including:

For my project I'm sharing the assembly video for our new Beach Bar Tiny House Add-ons set. This die is the sixth Add-ons set to fit our popular foundation Tiny House Pop-up.

In addition to the new Beach Bar Tiny House Add-ons, I also used three more of the new release dies - Beach Borders, Word Set 16 - Beach Happy Hour, and Rectangles and Labels - Crosshatch. The foundation die (required) is the Tiny House Pop-up.

 

 

My card measures 5" x 6" when closed and can be mailed in an A7 envelope. The front features the cocktail border and crabs from the Beach Borders, the scalloped rectangle and labels from Rectangles and Labels - Crosshatch, a palm tree and flamingo from Beach Bar Tiny House Add-ons, and a greeting from Word Set 16 - Beach Happy Hour.

 

 

Open the card and the Beach Bar pops up, complete with thatched roof, sand, palms, flamingos and fancy drinks. 

 

 

Here's a closer look at the Beach Bar. I also used the thatched roof die to make a fringed edge for a little beach towel.

 

 

The thatched roof can be styled with as much windblown and curled thatch as desired, as you can see in this similar card (the packaging sample) which is a 5x5 square card. To attach a cluster of drinks on the bar I used a strip of transparency attached to a side of the opening and then the drinks attached to the transparency.

 

On April 15, 2023 I'll be teaching a Zoom Class featuring three of the new dies, including the Beach Bar Tiny House Add-ons. Find the details on our Events Page. Kits must be purchased through a participating store.

Here are the dies and supplies used on my card. The waves paper is an older PhotoPlay design from my stash called "Cool Off" (#FS2528). 

 

Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 65 - Rubber Band Pop-ups

Welcome to Designer Challenge 65 with a theme of RUBBER BAND POP-UPS. I challenged the team to use any of our die sets that utilize a rubber band. There are five dies to choose from: Surprise Ball Pop-up, Bitty Ball Pop-up, Mini Ball Pop-up, Surprise Cube Pop-up or Bam Box Pop-up. Once again their creativity is off the charts!

For my card and video I'm showing how to combine the Tiny House Pop-up with the Bam Box Pop-up so the house will pop up in the card independent of a card fold. This is a fun alternate assembly for the house that allows it to be placed facing forward in the card instead of the normal assembly diagonal over a card fold. I decorated it as a doghouse using our Doghouse Tiny House Add-ons set.

My card measures 5"x 5" when closed, so it will fit in an A7 envelope. The two flaps for the card front are held together with magnets. An alternate closure could be a belly band or a string closure. I decorated the front with pieces from the Doghouse Tiny House Add-ons set, Backyard Charms and Squares - Crosshatch.

Open the card and the doghouse and Bam Box pop up at the same time, powered by rubber bands. I used our Mini Alphabet and Numbers set to spell out the greeting.

The Bam Box next to the doghouse animates the dog, grass and flowers. I used the same paper as the background so it would blend in. The patterned paper is an older Echo Park design called Peek-a-Boo.

The flat position for the tiny house is as shown below. It is connected to the card using the tapered tab on the left side of the house.

Frances Byrne used the Surprise Cube Pop-up to fashion a fashionable birthday card that's pretty in pink! The Dolled Up Charms work perfectly on the Surprise Cubes and I love how Frances used the Purse Pop-up decorator pieces on the front of the card. Sue Small-Kreider rang in the new year with a fun Surprise Cube card celebrating 2023. I love the iridescent paper and the feather confecting that is loose in the card. Click over to Sue's blog for more info, including her double belly band closure.

Lois Bak used the Bam Box Pop-up for a shimmery wedding card. I love how she added bubbles over the champagne flutes! Click over to Lois's blog to see the lovely card front and a video of this card opening.

Fran Sabad combined a Surprise Ball and Bitty Ball and fashioned an adorable ladybug! What a sweet little bug. I especially like how she did the eyes with a hole punch cut out for the catchlights. Adorable!

Suzanne Smit combined the Coffee Cup Pop-up with a Bam Box to animate a cupcake next to it. This is such a great illustration of how the Bam Box can be used to add elements around a traditional pop-up. I love the colors and styling on this card, especially the coffee beans atop the cupcakes!

Karen Aicken created a wedding card using the Surprise Cube to pop-up her greeting label. I love her color choices here and how the elements are so warm and vibrant. Click over to Karen's blog for more information on this card, including a video walk-through.

Nicky Foden made a spa day card featuring three stacked Surprise Cubes. I love how she styled the Princess with a mud mask! So many great details on this card and if you click over to Nicky's blog you'll find step-by-step instructions for this lovely card.

Sandy Diller created a Slider Box with birthday Surprise Cubes inside. She also added a Bam Box to the bottom of the Slider Box to pop-up the greeting. Such a great combination of dies and I love how Sandy used the decorator pieces from the Bam Box on the sides of the cubes. Click to her blog for a video of this box in action!

Jen Webster knows her way around a Copic marker and her card is no exception. I just adore how she created pop-up cupcakes with Bam Boxes and then created so much depth and character with her coloring skills. She even created the swirl suckers. Amazing!

Sneak Peek - Karen Burniston December 2022 Release

Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 50: Haunted! (Haunted House Pop-up)

Welcome to our October 2021 Designer Challenge with a theme of Haunted! The team was challenged to make Halloween Cards. This is our 50th Designer Challenge. Whoo hoo!

For my card and video I created the assembly video for the Haunted Tiny House Add-ons, which requires the foundation die  Tiny House Pop-up.

My card measures 5" x 5" when closed, which means it will fit in an A7 envelope for mailing. For the front of the card I layered two Echo Park patterned papers, added a thin border from our Border Blends - Arglye set, and then created a spooky scene with the Landcape Scene, Haunted Tiny House Add-ons and Happy Halloween dies. I was inspired by Karen Aicken to double the tree to make it bigger. You'll see her card when you scroll through the Designer cards below.

Open the card and the haunted house pops up, decorated with all the pieces included in the Add-ons set. 

The Landscape Scene includes the tree and the circle die that's perfect for a moon. The rest of the elements come included in the Tiny House Pop-up and Haunted Tiny House Add-ons sets.

Now let's take a look at the awesome Halloween cards created by our talented design team. For each of these cards there is a full blog post, supply list and, for some of the cards, a video as well. Click the designer's name to visit the blog post, which will open in a new window.

Fran Sabad made an absolutely haunting (see what I did there?) spooky castle card featuring a pop-up vampire inside. The colors are amazing and Fran chose to have a flap fold to the back of the card instead of the front to not obscure any of the scene.

Frances Byrne also made a pop-up vampire card featuring the Halloween Scene, Halloween Elements and Iron Fence Pop-up. I particularly like her choice to use the creepy hands from the Halloween Elements set as vampire hands. Brilliant!

Lois Bak chose to make a Pumpkinhead character for her card. I love her choice to hold the card closed with a decorated belly band. She has also incorporated the Holiday House and some of our other Halloween decorator dies. Delightful!

Sandy Diller blew us away with this clever haunted pop-up Barn card. What a great idea! I love how she's decked out the farm animals in costumes. So many great details on this card, including the crooked doors and spiderized weather vane!

Kelly Booth made this clever gatefold slimline card where two angled platforms from the Mini Pops set lift up ghosts and a string of banners above the cemetery below. The eerie night sky is stunning!

Karen Aicken shows how well the small elements in the Haunted Tiny House Add-ons set also work with our other House dies to turn them into haunted houses. For this fabulous card she used the House and Fence Pop-up. So many great details and clever touches in this card. I love how Karen made custom trees using the Landscape Scene for the backdrop of this card.

Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 49: Sun or Snow (Gingerbread House Pop-up)

Welcome to our September 2021 Designer Challenge with a theme of Sun or Snow. The team was challenged to make a sunny or snowy card.

Since I really needed to create an assembly video for one of our new die sets I took the opportunity to have it perform double duty as my snow-themed challenge card.

My card measures 5" x 5" when closed, which means it will fit in an A7 envelope for mailing. For the front of the card I layered the Merry Christmas and Merry Christmas Shadow dies and then traced around the word with a white gel pen to mimic the look of a cookie. I then repeated elements from inside the card as a simple lead-in.

Open the card and the gingerbread house pops up, decorated with all the pieces included in the Add-ons set. 

For an added element I used the Street Lantern Pop-up, cut and styled as a gingerbread lantern and shortened to fit the card. The snowmen are fashioned out of circles, stenciled features, a candy-cane scarf and bird leg arms.

Sandy Diller created a wonderful stacked Pop 'n Swap card. Her card is so sunny it has me dreaming of a day on the beach. Click over to her blog post to watch a video about this card.

Lois Bak has been incorporating scenery patterned papers into cards where she then fills in with die cut elements. This snowy Garden Bench slimline card is perfection!

Fran Sabad has a charming deck the halls card featuring a stacked Bitty Ball Santa Claus and the Iron Fence die sets. I love her candy-striped Street Lanterns!

Karen Aicken has a stunning snow-themed card made using the Photo Collage Pop-up. You really must click over to Karen's blog to see the video for this card. Plus it features her fabulous handwriting for the greeting. Amazing!

Kelly Booth created such a clever mix of both challenge choices by putting the Snowman Pop-up on the beach! I love, love, love this! Look at those cute flip-flops and the snowman holding the sun! Such cuteness (and danger) in one card!

Frances Byrne created a lovely snow-themed Garden Bench slimline card also featuring our Snowman and Street Lantern die sets. The colors are so rich and festive in this card. Stunning!

Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 46 - Set the Scene!

Welcome to our June Designer Challenge with a theme of SET THE SCENE! I challenged the team to create cards featuring a scene of some sort. Their cards are as amazing as always.

For my card I created a Tiny House Pop-up scene that incorporates a second pop-up, the Spinner Square Pop-up, attached to the side of the house to elevate and animate the greeting label. As the card opens the house pops up and the label spins slightly.

The card measures 4.25" x 5.5" when closed and will fit in an A2 envelope for mailing. For the front decoration I made a very simple lead-in by repeating elements from the card's interior. 

Once opened the full scene is revealed. The Tiny House pops up, bringing the Tiny Tree with it and also engaging the Spinner Square, which lifts and rotates the greeting. Attached to the greeting label is a butterfly charm from the Backyard Charms, attached with small jump rings. The hello greeting is from Word Set 6.

The Tiny House roof die has an optional built-in stamp layer. Simply ink the die before die cutting and the shingle pattern will be stamped on the roof during the die cutting process.

Fran Sabad combined the royalty dies with the new Slim Flaps and Frames for a stunning castle scene. The details are incredible! Definitely click over to Fran's blog to see all of the photos of this amazing card. Wow!

Karen Aicken created a shadow box front for her slimline card and then filled it with a gorgeous layered die cut scene. This looks ready to go on the wall as art! Make sure you click to her blog to see the interactive interior of the card. Stunning!

Kelly Booth made an orchard of cute tiny pink trees and then strung banners between them for an adorable birthday card. On her blog post you'll see the card's front and more angles to view all of the details of this sweet card.

Sandy Diller used the Fancy Label Accordion as a backdrop for a whole farm in a card. This is such a great illustration of how the decorator pieces from several sets can combine together for beautiful scenery. Click to Sandy's blog to see a video of this card in action.

Frances Byrne created a lovely picnic vista in a top fold slimline card. This card combines several of our die sets and uses the Mini Pops Pop-up to animate the trees and picnic basket. Lois Bak created an entire enchanted forest for here cute fence-perching fairies. This uses the Mushroom Tiny House Add-ons with the Tiny House and also the Tiny Trees. There are so many lovely details to this card and the front is equally stunning so head over to Lois's blog for a peek.

For my post I'm sharing the Assembly Videos for the Tiny House Pop-up, Mushroom Tiny House Add-ons and Tiny Trees Pop-up.

The Tiny House Pop-up makes an adorable little pop-up house that also features a roof die that is also a stamp! Simply add ink to the die before die cutting and the shingle pattern will be automatically stamped onto the piece during the die cutting process. This is a wonderful new advance in die technology and look for more of these types of hybrid dies in future releases.

With the Mushroom Tiny House Add-ons set you can convert the Tiny House into a Mushroom House. 

Another brand new die set that coordinates well with the Tiny House and Mushroom Tiny House is the new Tiny Trees Pop-up. Learn the assembly of this die here:

The Tiny Trees Pop-up die set includes 16 individual dies to make decorating for any season a breeze. This die set also includes a nifty fold splitter to move the trees off of the center fold and collapse them at different angles. This allows for multiple trees to be installed in the same card and at locations off of the center fold for a realistic orchard scene. Make sure you check out our Tree Fruit die if you like the Tiny Trees Pop-up.
