For my project I wanted to show off how well our new dies integrate with our previously-released dies. This is part of our brand philosophy - that new dies are always backwards compatible with your existing collection. For this project I was inspired by one I made years ago using dies from my licensing days. Now that the Holiday House is available again, it was the perfect time to make an updated version of this project.

Watch the video tutorial for this card on YouTube here:

This is a 4-page Fancy Label Accordion with the new Fancy Winter Frames used to decorate a couple of the pages. I also used the new Long Nature Edges for the stitched snow hills and small tree edges. The larger trees came from the Evergreen Pivot Panels.

Open the card to reveal a pop-up within a pop-up. The Evergreen Pivot Panels create the secondary pop-up for the four trees in the center.

On the first interior page I assembled the new Holiday House. This is an updated re-release from my licensing days. The die set includes all of the accessories shown except for the snowflake and tiny bow, which came from the Evergreen Pivot Panels.

The center two pages feature the Evergreen Pivot Panels integrated into the Fancy Accordion. I also used the stitched hills from the Long Nature Edges to make the background hills.

On the final page I used our Word Set 3 for a greeting, plus more trees and a snowflake.

All of the patterned papers are older designs from my stash.

Christmas Greetings Evergreen Pivot Panels Tag Book

Our brand focus has always been to create die sets that build on and coordinate with the dies from previous collections. The idea is that you are building a collection and nothing becomes obsolete because newer dies will provide fresh combinations and new looks. This card features six of our die sets released in four different collections. Our Pivot Panels die sets are designed to work on their own in a card or, as an option, they fit perfectly in our Tag Book Pop-up.

EvergreenTagBook

This card measures 3" x 6" when closed and can be mailed in an A7 envelope. The front features the Snowman and the reindeer from the Christmas Animals.

EvergreenTagBookClosed

Inside the card I swapped the pop-up mechanism that comes included with the Tag Book with the Evergreen Pivot Panels instead. I added a greeting using Word Set 3 - Holiday.

If you'd like to give this card a try you'll find the assembly videos for the dies on their product pages.

Pop-up Cards class projects - December 2019

My last class of the year is this Wednesday, December 18th at Scrapp'n Savvy in Conroe, TX. As of yesterday there were 2 seats left, so call the store quickly if you want in on this class.

Because it's so close to Christmas I chose not to make holiday cards for this class. We will start with a Surprise Ball Pop-up card with a generic theme of "oh happy day" that can be used for most occasions.

HappyDaySurpriseBallCard

The card measures 5x7 and also features our Flap and Closure die set. Decorator dies were pulled out of other pop-up sets including the cute little heart tree from the Oval Frames Pop-up die set and a bird from the Frame Pull Pop-up. The beautiful bird paper is from Bo Bunny. Other patterned papers are Echo Park.

HappyDaySurpriseBallCard

Next we'll make a birthday card using the Gift Pivot Panels (the die set is included in your kit). These papers are also Echo Park.

GiftPivotPanels

This card is a standard A2 size and will mail easily. It's decorated with our Crosshatch shape dies, Celebrate and Border Blends - Party die sets.

BirthdayGiftPivotPanelsBalloons

Students please bring these tools/supplies to class:

  • Scissors
  • Adhesives - tape runner, strong glue capable of making a fine line, mini glue dots, pop-dots (optional)
  • Paper piercer
  • Quickstick or tweezers for assembling the little presents
  • If you have them - clips for holding things together while glue dries. This could be large paper clips or bag clips or binder clips.
  • If you have one - a needle threader to pull the twine through the closure.
  • Print outs of these two cards OR plan to take photos of the originals with your phone/tablet to refer to in class.

I will have a full trunk show with me as well.

See you soon!

Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 26: Autumn

Happy October!

Our Designer Challenge this month has a theme of Autumn. The team has once again knocked it out of the park with their fabulous creations.

For my project and video I'm teaching a fun technique for doubling our Pivot Panels die sets. To demonstrate I've used the House Pivot Panels, but this technique works with any of them. I also used the Tree Pop-up and Nature Edges.

DC26Autumn

Learn how to make this card by watching the video tutorial:

To make a double pivot panels card you'll want a landscape 5x7 card (or larger). For the front of my card I have a simple lead-in using the same styling as the interior. (My favorite way to make card fronts.)

WelcomeAutumnClosed

Open the card to reveal a forest of trees behind an autumnal village. The video shows how to attach two pivot panels die sets together to create a longer pop-up. You also have room behind the pop-up to add another platform as I did, or even to fill it with a third pivot panels. (You decide!)

WelcomeAutumnOpen

Here's a closer look at the houses and trees. The patterned papers (Photo Play) do all of the work creating the fall colors. The greeting is from Word Set 7.

WelcomeAutumnCloseup

Want to give this technique a try? Here are the products used in the video:

Let's look at some additional autumn inspiration by our talented design team.

Frances Byrne kicks us off with a gorgeous Photo Collage card featuring vibrant autumn elements and colors. I love how Frances seamlessly mixes die cut elements and stamps into fabulous scenes.

FB_HappyFall4wm

Kelly Booth pays homage to pumpkin spice season with a fabulous Coffee Cup pop-up in fall colors. Notice the festive speckled cup and stenciled napkin edge. I'll take a venti, please!

KB_CoffeeFall

Karen Aicken amuses with a Spinner Square card featuring a Funny Bones sentiment. I love how she created a custom inked background and also used the happy die from Word Set 7 to completely fill the front of the card. What a great technique!

KA_Card_KB_TurkeyShot

Sandy Diller made a vibrant and beautiful staggered Charm Accordion to celebrate the season. I love the pumpkin scene she created along the bottom of her card plus the solid panel front cover.

SD_I love fall

Lois Bak used the Rockin' Rectangle and some fun Riley and Company stamps for a Thanksgiving card that's sure to delight. The front features the Autumn Elements layered into a lovely embellishment.

LB_DC Bennie's Thanksgiving front

Fran Sabad also used the Rockin' Rectangle and also used Riley and Company stamps but with a different effect. Fran made a window card and fun apple-picking colors. What a great way to welcome fall on the farm.

FS_KB-Spinner-Square-06-open

Hopefully we've inspired you to craft up some autumn goodness. Join us next month on Wednesday, November 6th for our next Designer Challenge with a theme of HOLIDAY ACCORDIONS. The team will be using our Charm Accordion or Fancy Accordion to make holiday cards.

Happy Crafting!

Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 25: Enjoy the Ride!

Happy September everyone!

First just a little update on die releases - we elected not to release anything specifically Christmas/Holiday this year. Our July release contained so many dies that can be styled for holiday (Photo Collage, Triple Flip, Barn, Train, Family Room) that we felt our existing holiday dies would pair nicely with any of the new ones to "holiday" them up. Look for new Christmas-specific dies next summer. We are planning a small release in November, but the dies will be generic.

Our theme this month is Enjoy the Ride. The challenge is to use our Rocket Pop-up or Train Pivot Panels for a card of any theme. To illustrate how well our newest pop-ups can be styled for Christmas, I decided to use our Train Pivot Panels for a Beary Christmas card. It's the Polar (bear) Express, if you will.

This card measures 4.25" x 5.5" when closed and will mail in a standard A2 envelope. The patterned papers are very old ones from my stash (We R Memory Keepers Peppermint Twist collection from 2011.) The front of the card is created with two layers of Outdoor Scene hills and clouds, plus the Winter Animals bear holding the wreath from the Christmas Animals. To create the custom greeting, I combined the "B" and "a" from Birthday (Word Set 2) with the "Merry Christmas" die from Word Set 3.

BearyChristmasFront

Open the card and the train pops up. I altered the train cars to be flat cars (thanks to Sandy Diller for that idea) and used the smallest cloud from the Outdoor Scene as engine smoke (credit to Lois Bak).  The tracks and crossing sign are from the add-on Train Elements die set.

BearyChristmasOpen

Because the bears were so tall on the train cars I used the bear die to cut away the shape of the head from the upper part of the pop-up. The video teaches this technique and it's a good one to use any time you plan on filling the first two cars with tall items.

BearyChristmasCloseUp

If you'd like to create your version of this card, here are the links to the supplies I used.

KBDT_2019_Graphicb

And then there were 8. Eagle-eyed observers will notice a missing face from the Design Team graphic this month. After a decade (yes, a decade!) of being on my Design Teams, Shelly Hickox has decided to retire. Between a recent move and a new grandbaby, Shelly has plenty to keep her busy and wants to free up time to focus on family and travel. We will miss her incredible creations (I like to call them Shellypieces) and wish her the very best.

Let's take a look at the incredible Enjoy the Ride creations by our talented team. Make sure you click their names to open their blog post in a new window. You'll find the links to their supplies plus more photos, tips, tricks, techniques, even videos on their individual blog posts.

Karen Aicken has a signature technique with the Train Pivot Panels - she uses the die as a generic multi-tier pop-up in a top-fold card by simply turning it and then decorating each section in any theme. This month she took that idea one step further by cutting the Train out of a clear material to animate the Rocket and Space Charms so they really appear to be floating. Because folded acetate tends to spring back, Karen's card opens on its own! What a fun effect when her grandson pulls the card out of the envelope!

Card_KB_TrainPivotWrocket

Fran Sabad also combined both the Train Pivot Panels and the Rocket Pop-up for this adorably bright and cheery Enjoy the Ride card. There are so many occasions where you might send an Enjoy the Ride card - birthday, congrats, retirement, new baby, travel, etc. I love all the little touches on Fran's card.

KB-TrainRocket

Lois Bak created a Christmas Train that is both holly and jolly! She happened upon some puffy stickers in a craft store with a Santa that perfectly fit in the window of the train. I love the beautiful evergreen scenery she used as a backdrop and the festive red and green puffs of smoke (use the wheels of the train for this effect). So merry!

DC Christmas Train

Frances Byrne also made a Christmas Train, this time incorporating some cute stamps. Our dies coordinate so nicely with stamps - it's a great pairing. I particularly love Frances's choice of the Crosshatch Rectangles in the backdrop for edging and the way she shortened "holidays" to a "Ho Ho Ho" greeting. Festive and fun!

KBDCAllAboard3wm

Kelly Booth created a personalized train Tag Book for a friend's retirement. She mixed the perfect school stamps and papers with the dies for this one-of-a-kind treasure. I love the color scheme of this card and Kelly's signature coloring skills. Fabulous!

KB_EnjoyTheRideTagBook

Summer Hills-Painter's card is a blast! She used the Rocket Pop-up, Space Charms and Enjoy the Ride dies for a birthday card that's out of this world. I particularly like all the brightly colored rhinestones that decorate the alien ship on the front of the card. Plus her triple flame on the rocket. Love this to the moon and back!

SHP_AlienAdventure

Sandy Diller created a steampunk train birthday card and it is ahhhmazing! She added a wing to the side of the engine to match the styling of the patterned paper and her cloud is attached to an acetate strip so it moves with the pop-up as the card opens and closes. The gears filling the train cars are the perfect choice for this steampunk work of art.

SD_SteampunkTrain

Well I hope you enjoyed the ride through these fabulous transportation creations. Join us next month on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 for our next Designer Challenge with a theme of AUTUMN. I can't wait to see all the beautiful fall colors in next month's theme.

Happy Crafting!

We have also compiled a July 2019 Digital Catalog with all of the new dies in one handy spot. Feel free to download and print your own copy.

KB Riley July 2019 Catalog Cover

Let's look closer at the six new interactive dies in this release.

Train Pivot Panels - the newest in our popular series of Pivot Panels die sets is the Train Pivot Panels. The Train Elements set is the perfect add-on, including the tracks, crossing sign and All Aboard greeting. Our animal dies fit in the cars as an option, and the new Tiny Accessories 3 die set includes a train conductor's hat and bandana.

TrainPivotPanels

As with all of our Pivot Panels die sets, the Train Pivot Panels can be added to the Twist Panel die set (sold separately) to make an extra-dynamic pop-up card.

Train-Twist-Panel

Family Room Pop-up - Here's a pop-up that's specific . . . and yet generic! It's so customizable to whatever colors/patterns you choose. It has quick and easy assembly and a very impressive reveal. You can also customize it be adding any of our animal sets to the furniture. Add-on sets include Word Set 10 - Thinking of You, Home Sweet Home, and the Memory Charms.

FamilyRoom

The Memory Charms coordinate perfectly with the Family Room Pop-up, especially for the fronts of the cards.

FamilyRoomGetWell

Barn Pop Stand - by popular request we've brought back the Barn Pop Stand die set. The set has been expanded with extra duplicate pieces (no more double cutting the doors) and a couple of new pieces (hay, grass, window). The barn doors slide open to reveal something inside. We also have a brand-new add-on set called the Farm Edges, plus three animal sets, including a chicken, lamb, pig, goat, cow, longhorn, horse, unicorn and zebra! The Tiny Accessories 3 set includes a farmer/cowboy outfit for the animals and the new Howdy word makes a great greeting.

BarnPopStand

BarnHogsKisses

Triple Flip - our newest pull tab die set is the Triple Flip. It's sized for an A2 card, at 5.5" wide. Pull the tab and all three rectangles flip over at the same time. The rectangles are sized to fit our charm sets and animal dies perfectly. It's shown here with our new Happy Hour Charms and Cheers word.

TripleFlip

Here's another Triple Flip card, this time combining the Space, Happy Hour and Birthday Charms and staggering the locations of the rectangles.

TripleFlipSpace

Rocket Pop-up -the Space Charms are also a great add-on to the new Rocket Pop-up. This fun mechanism will launch the rocket as the card is opened. The rocket can be use independently as a stand alone element and this pop-up also makes great window cards. The Enjoy the Ride word set goes nicely with the Rocket and the Train Pivot Panels.

RocketPopUp

I will be teaching a two-card class at Scrapp'n Savvy in Conroe, Texas, on Wednesday using the new dies. We will be making this bright and fun Rocket Pop-up card in class. It also uses the Space Charms, Enjoy the Ride and our Crosshatch shape dies.

RocketCard

Photo Collage Pop-up - if you're looking for a completely generic but massively WOW pop-up die, you'll love the Photo Collage Pop-up. This fun mechanism twists and expands to reveal eight photo frames in a fun collage bulletin board style. The photo frames can be filled with our animals, charms, your favorite stamps, or actual photos. Accessories that come included in the set are push pins, binder clips, a ticket and the word "smile". Great add-ons are the Memory Charms and Home Sweet Home word set.

Photocollage

The Photo Collage Pop-up will also work wonderfully on scrapbook pages or to make a truly personalized card featuring photos. Here's a birthday card where I used pictures of my twins from age 3 to age 20. The photo frame fits square 1.25" photos. This sample also uses the little camera from the Memory Charms set.

PhotoCollageKidsBday

Scrapp'n Savvy students on Wednesday will get to try this die and make a birthday-themed card. One frame will be left open for a photo of the recipient. On my sample card I used a photo of myself on my 9th birthday, wearing my favorite Mork 'n Mindy tee-shirt that said "Shazbot". (Nanu nanu!)

PhotoCollage copy

Scrapp'n Savvy Students please bring these supplies to class:

  • Scissors
  • All types of adhesive including glue with a fine tip, tape runner, mini glue dots, double-sided tape and pop dots
  • Black pen for pig feet and snout
  • Bone folder
  • Quickstik or tweezers for placing small pieces
  • Optional: if you have a photo of the birthday recipient, bring it sized at 1.25" square. Otherwise, plan to add it at home later.

We are introducing the collection today as a Sneak Peek and opening our website for pre-orders at 8 am, Eastern time. Our shipping starts July 15th in the order received.

I am plugging away on assembly videos and will be uploading them over the next couple of weeks as I complete them. Class Projects - Scrapp'n Savvy January 2019

On Wednesday I'll be teaching at Scrapp'n Savvy with our brand new release. Both class sessions are sold out, but I do teach at Scrapp'n Savvy once a quarter, so check the teaching events portion of our monthly newsletter for dates.

Everything in the kits is pre-cut so we only have to focus on assembly and you will not need to use your included die set, the Rockin' Rectangle Pop-up in class.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that the shipment of new dies is still en route to Kansas and will not arrive to Texas in time for class. We're very sorry. So we'll need you to pick up your Rockin' Rectangle die set next week from the store and if that's inconvenient we will mail it to you. The trunk show will go on as normal with our other 73 dies being available to purchase and take home and the 18 new ones can be purchased with the class-day special and then picked up next week.

So let's look at what you'll be making.

Our first card features the Rockin' Rectangle Pop-up, the new Feathered Animals (turkey), Spring Animals (chick) and Tiny Accessories 2 (outfits). This is a fun "hello" card to send to a girlfriend. The little pieces to make the animals are small. You'll definitely want your fine glue and a pair of tweezers or a quick stick. The purses have brads, so bring a paper piercer.

RR Bird Hello Card

Our second card is a beautiful "thanks" bouquet using our new Woven Basket Box Card die set and a greeting from Word Set 1. Many thanks to Fran Sabad for giving me permission to teach a card heavily inspired by one of hers. Once again you'll want your fine glue for assembly and if you like sparkly flower centers, bring your Wink of Stella glitter pen or some Stickles.

WovenBasketThanksCard

Our final card will be a Heart Pivot Panels card that you can use as a Valentine or as an anytime card for someone you love. It is accessorized with our new Word Set 9 - Love and our Crosshatch Rectangles. Once again you'll want your fine glue and a paper piercer for the brads.

HeartPivotXOXO

Here are the class supplies you'll need:

  • Scissors
  • All manner of adhesives including tape runner, glue capable of a fine line, thin double-sided tape (1/4" is good), miniature glue dots and pop dots.
  • Paper piercer
  • Tweezers or Quik Stick for placing small pieces
  • Print out the pictures from this blog post OR save them to your phone or tablet for reference during class.
  • Optional extras - Wink of Stella (or similar) glitter pen, Inks for edges (a little brown on the turkey looks nice!), ball stylus and a piece of fun foam for shaping flowers if that's your thing

And one last thing - I have to extend a HUGE thank you to Becky Morehead for spending Saturday at my house helping me cut kits. The pieces really add up when you're teaching entirely with die cuts - something that I will often discover AFTER the design phase, when I start writing down exactly what needs to be cut for each card. GULP!

January 2019 Sneak Peek Week - Heart Pivot Panels

Happy Tuesday!

This week we are showing ideas for our upcoming January release, which will show up on our website for pre-order on Monday, January 21, 2019 with shipping starting January 31st.

You will find some great ideas from our talented design team (clickable links in the left sidebar) on their own blogs. On my blog this week I'll be sharing the assembly videos for the new dies to help people understand how they work.

Today's post is introducing the Heart Pivot Panels. (All new release die links will start working on January 21st)

1088_HeartPivotPanelsWM

The Heart Pivot Panels will work exactly like the Evergreen Pivot Panels and the House Pivot Panels and, just like those two die sets, the decorator pieces can be used independently on other projects. The pop-up can be installed inside a card OR, as an option, coordinates with the Twist Panel Pop-up, Tag Book Pop-up and Circle Tag Book Pop-up. Watch this assembly video to learn how this die works.

This die will work well year-round for any type of love-themed card, from Valentines to wedding, anniversary, pick-me-up, congrats, thank-you, Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthday, sympathy, get well . . . pretty much any theme! HeartPivotPanelsBoth

Some dies that coordinate perfectly with the Heart Pivot Panels are the Border Blends- Argyle, which can be blended to create heart-shaped borders. and Word Set 9 - Love. For greeting panels, our nested crosshatch shape dies work wonderfully.

LoveYouHeartPivotPanels

Pivot panels can also be used with our Twist Panel Pop-up die set to add even more pop-up action to the twist panel.

HeartTwistPanelBoth
To up the "cuteness" factor of the Heart Pivot Panels, consider pairing it with some of our animals and accessories sets. This card uses the new Feathered Animals and Tiny Accessories 2 to add the heart-shaped glasses and heart-shaped candy box.

XoXoHeartTwistPanel

Check back tomorrow for another assembly video of our new release. If you missed the summary video of the release, here it is:
