Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 78: Oh my Hearts!
February 16, 2024
Well, well, well! The second month of 2024 and I've already blown the Designer Challenge schedule!
Here's what happened:
FIRST, I foolishly scheduled a Designer Challenge for a week in which I was away teaching on a cruise. In my mind I would just finish the DC video early and schedule it to post while I was away.
LIKE I'D NEVER MET ME!
Obviously that didn't happen, so the night before the trip I pushed the challenge to the day after I returned, following our new release on February 13th. I was up bright and early on Tuesday, ready for a full and fun day of showing off our new release and then following up in the afternoon with a challenge post.
AND THEN . . .
I missed the bottom stair, stepped full force (with a gravity assist) barefoot onto the hard tile floor and . . . broke my foot. *Sigh*
So I am now sporting a lovely boot and using a super cool knee scooter borrowed from a friend (Friend is Jenn, scooter is Kevin) and somehow Friday has arrived without the challenge being posted. Whoops!
The theme for February is OH MY HEARTS! I challenged the team to use hearts in any project. This challenge was scheduled (twice) to go up before Valentine's Day but it's completely my fault (and clumsiness) that it didn't. Apologies to our patient and talented Design Team.
For my project I made an Assembly Video for our Mini Gift Bag die set. Because one of the bags I assemble in the video has a heart shaker front, it works for the challenge theme.
The Mini Gift Bag measures 2.25" wide by 2.9" tall by 0.9" in depth. It's perfect for a standard sized gift card or for any other small gift or trinket.
Here are the dies and supplies used in the video:
Let's take a look at how our talented Design Team interpreted the Oh My Hearts! challenge. In each case you can click the designer's name to go to their blog post where you'll find additional photos, supply lists and, in some cases, videos and/or photo tutorials.
Sue Small-Kreider created the most adorable space-defying miniature pop-up cards to fit inside the Candy Hearts Box. You simply must click over to the blog post to see the action on these cards and her clever re-purposing of dies to miniaturize them. What an unexpected and impressive treat to pull out of the box!
Nicky Foden has such a wonderful pink and chocolate color scheme for this Valentine's Day card featuring the Hearts Add-on for the Fancy Label Accordion. I love how the whole card is a scrumptious box of chocolates!
Jen Webster has an awe-inspiring talent of using her coloring skills to enhance die cuts and this impressive Photo Collage Valentine is no exception. I just love how all the little animal dies come to life under her skillful shading.
Suzanne Smit created a fabulous 4-page Charm Accordion project in a Love theme. What a great styling idea to cover the bottom half of the accordion with die cut hearts! This will be such a lovely display piece for whoever receives it.
Lois Bak created this adorable Valentine card and Candy Hearts Box collection. I particularly like how Lois customized a window in the Candy Hearts Box by using a circle and frame from the Circle Charm Pop-up. Our die sets mix and match so well for custom results.
Sandy Diller is amazing at robbing mechanisms from different dies to create entirely new pop-up looks. In this case she's animated the Heart Add-ons with the mechanism from the Flower Pot Pop-up. What fun! Be sure to click over and watch her video tutorial on this great technique!
Hopefully you are inspired to make some heartfelt bags and cards of your own! Join us next month on March 6, 2024 for our next Designer Challenge with a theme of "BUNNY EARS" where everyone will be incorporating a bunny (or just the ears) into a card.
Happy Crafting!
