Class Projects - Scrapp'n Savvy January 2019

On Wednesday I'll be teaching at Scrapp'n Savvy with our brand new release. Both class sessions are sold out, but I do teach at Scrapp'n Savvy once a quarter, so check the teaching events portion of our monthly newsletter for dates.

Everything in the kits is pre-cut so we only have to focus on assembly and you will not need to use your included die set, the Rockin' Rectangle Pop-up in class.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that the shipment of new dies is still en route to Kansas and will not arrive to Texas in time for class. We're very sorry. So we'll need you to pick up your Rockin' Rectangle die set next week from the store and if that's inconvenient we will mail it to you. The trunk show will go on as normal with our other 73 dies being available to purchase and take home and the 18 new ones can be purchased with the class-day special and then picked up next week.

So let's look at what you'll be making.

Our first card features the Rockin' Rectangle Pop-up, the new Feathered Animals (turkey), Spring Animals (chick) and Tiny Accessories 2 (outfits). This is a fun "hello" card to send to a girlfriend. The little pieces to make the animals are small. You'll definitely want your fine glue and a pair of tweezers or a quick stick. The purses have brads, so bring a paper piercer.

Our second card is a beautiful "thanks" bouquet using our new Woven Basket Box Card die set and a greeting from Word Set 1. Many thanks to Fran Sabad for giving me permission to teach a card heavily inspired by one of hers. Once again you'll want your fine glue for assembly and if you like sparkly flower centers, bring your Wink of Stella glitter pen or some Stickles.

Our final card will be a Heart Pivot Panels card that you can use as a Valentine or as an anytime card for someone you love. It is accessorized with our new Word Set 9 - Love and our Crosshatch Rectangles. Once again you'll want your fine glue and a paper piercer for the brads.

Here are the class supplies you'll need:

• Scissors
• All manner of adhesives including tape runner, glue capable of a fine line, thin double-sided tape (1/4" is good), miniature glue dots and pop dots.
• Paper piercer
• Tweezers or Quik Stick for placing small pieces
• Print out the pictures from this blog post OR save them to your phone or tablet for reference during class.
• Optional extras - Wink of Stella (or similar) glitter pen, Inks for edges (a little brown on the turkey looks nice!), ball stylus and a piece of fun foam for shaping flowers if that's your thing

And one last thing - I have to extend a HUGE thank you to Becky Morehead for spending Saturday at my house helping me cut kits. The pieces really add up when you're teaching entirely with die cuts - something that I will often discover AFTER the design phase, when I start writing down exactly what needs to be cut for each card. GULP!

January 2019 Sneak Peeks - Oval Frames Pop-up

Our January release is now available for pre-order with shipping starting January 31st in the order received. I'm working on assembly videos for the new dies and sharing them here on my blog as I finish them.

Today's post is introducing the Oval Frames Pop-up die set.

The Oval Frames Pop-up is a great all-purpose generic die set with a lot of possibilities. While the oval shape is perfect for Easter-themed cards, it is very generic and will work for any occasion, any theme. It creates a 4-panel pop-up in a side fold card, making a great display piece. Learn the assembly in this video:

For the video card I used the drop down assembly and decorated with a heart tree and butterfly scene. The heart tree, ovals, grass and rolling hills come included in the set. The butterfly is a charm from the Charm Accordion set. The hello greeting is from Word Set 1. On the front of the card I added a Crosshatch Rectangle. This card measures 5" x 5" when closed.

The card on the packaging measures 4.5" x 6" when closed and also features the drop down assembly method. I added the clouds and background hills from the Outdoor Scene die set, plus a greeting from Word Set 9 - Love and the bunny from the Spring Animals die set.

January 2019 Sneak Peek Week - Border Blends

Our January release is now available for pre-order on our website. Last week I started sharing the assembly videos for the new dies and have another one to share today.

These are the Border Blends dies - Argyle and Party. Each set comes with three individual dies to cut positive space borders, but then they feature a tab and notch system that also allows the dies to be combined to make various combinations using the negative spaces.

Here's a card featuring the Party set and our Ice Cream Sundae Pop-up, along with the new You're Sweet! word die.

For this Heart Pivot Panels card, I used the Argyle Border Blends.

Today's post is introducing the Rockin' Rectangle Pop-up. (All new release die links will start working on January 21st)

The Rockin' Rectangle Pop-up is a fabulous generic pop-up die set. It makes great window cards, although of course you can use it without a window for a pop-up surprise inside the card. Opening the card will cause the rectangle to lift up, out, and rock as the card opens and closes. All of the decorator pieces are generic  Learn the assembly by watching this video:

For the video card I made a "hello" card featuring two fancy feathered friends. The chick is from the Spring Animals and the turkey from the Feathered Animals and the pillbox hat, glasses, pearls and purses came from Tiny Acessories 2. The script word is from Word Set 6 - Summer and the rest of the greeting is computer generated. The edge at the top of the grass was made by slipping the rectangle through a border die in the Border Blends - Argyle set and cutting just one edge. The sequins are made using a die in the Rockin' Rectangle set.

You can also assemble the Rockin' Rectangle in a horizontal card with or without a window. For this sample I used the Garden Charms, Nature Edges and Rectangles - Crosshatch.

For the packaging sample I created a graduation card with the owl from the Feathered Animals, graduation cap and diploma from Tiny Accessories 2, and greetings from Word Set 8 - Congrats.

The Ice Cream Sundae Pop-up came at the specific request of Corinna, who handles our social media and customer service. It was the perfect suggestion for a specific themed pop-up that could be offered at a very affordable price. (Thanks, C!) Despite having 9 individual dies that combine to make an impressive and substantial pop-up, the actual footprint of the die set is small, meaning we are able to offer it at the lowest price of any of our pop-ups to date. If you've been considering getting started with our pop-up dies this might be the perfect first choice - a die set that has a specific theme, but yet works for many occasions, includes decorator dies that can be used independently and all at a price that you'd associate with a decorator set.  Learn the assembly by watching this video:

For the video card I've added our new Border Blends - Party die set, You're Sweet sentiment greeting, and our Circles- Crosshatch.

For the packaging samples I used the same combination of dies, except using the Squares - Crosshatch instead of the circles.

January 2019 Sneak Peek Week - Circle Tag Book Pop-up

Today's post is introducing the Circle Tag Book Pop-up. (All new release die links will start working on January 21st)

The Circle Tag Book Pop-up is a new version of our best-selling Tag Book Pop-up. We wanted to give a second option for this popular mechanism. For the new die set, the tag itself measures 3.25" x 5" (versus the 3" x 6" tag in the Tag Book set) meaning the completed card will mail in an A2 envelope. It also features pop-up circles instead of a square/tag combo on the pop-up. The pop-up circles each measure 2.25" in diameter, making them the perfect size to highlight any of our Charm Die Sets or to showcase stamped images. The card I make in the video incorporates a few other dies, including the Get Well Charms, Word Set 9 - Love, and Word Set 2 - Birthday. The rest of the decorator pieces on this card come included in the Circle Tag Book die set, including the circles, rings, borders, banners and hole protectors. 

For this baby-themed Circle Tag Book I incorporated the Baby Charms and "sweet" from You're Sweet. 

For the card featured on the packaging, I used the Garden Charms. 

The Circle Tag Book Pop-up coordinates well with our Pivot Panels die sets as well. Overall it is just a great all around generic pop-up with tons of possibilities.

Today's post is introducing the Woven Basket Box Card. (All new release die links will start working on January 21st)

The Woven Basket Box Card checks off two common requests  from fans of the brand - a standalone box card die set and a new version of the cute tiny woven basket from a now-retired Props set. This die set does both. It features tapered sides, a woven texture, rope handles and grassy crossbars. Everything is very user-friendly, as you will see in this assembly video:

This die does differ from our Flower Pot Pop-up die set. The Flower Pot is smaller and is designed to be installed inside a card. The Woven Basket is meant to be a standalone card that you flatten and mail. However, if you own both sets, you'll be able to mix and match the decorator pieces (flowers & vines) between the two sets and they do not duplicate. This card uses our new Happy Spring script die for the greeting.

As always, you choose your colors, styling and theme. Our script word dies work really well with the basket, either suspended in the bouquet or attached to the front. If you want to add a place to sign the card, simply add a shape to the back panel or tie a tag to the handle. 

For this masculine version, I didn't use the flowers or vines that come in the set and instead turned to the Outdoor Scene, the decorator trees from the Evergreen Pivot Panels, and our Camping Charms. The greeting is from Word Set 2 - Birthday.

The Woven Basket Box Card flattens for mailing (I recommend an A7 envelope) and then becomes a beautiful display piece. It's so versatile - you can fill the basket with anything, for any season, any theme.

Today's post is introducing the Heart Pivot Panels. (All new release die links will start working on January 21st)

The Heart Pivot Panels will work exactly like the Evergreen Pivot Panels and the House Pivot Panels and, just like those two die sets, the decorator pieces can be used independently on other projects. The pop-up can be installed inside a card OR, as an option, coordinates with the Twist Panel Pop-up, Tag Book Pop-up and Circle Tag Book Pop-up. Watch this assembly video to learn how this die works.

This die will work well year-round for any type of love-themed card, from Valentines to wedding, anniversary, pick-me-up, congrats, thank-you, Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthday, sympathy, get well . . . pretty much any theme! 

Some dies that coordinate perfectly with the Heart Pivot Panels are the Border Blends- Argyle, which can be blended to create heart-shaped borders. and Word Set 9 - Love. For greeting panels, our nested crosshatch shape dies work wonderfully.

Pivot panels can also be used with our Twist Panel Pop-up die set to add even more pop-up action to the twist panel. 

To up the "cuteness" factor of the Heart Pivot Panels, consider pairing it with some of our animals and accessories sets. This card uses the new Feathered Animals and Tiny Accessories 2 to add the heart-shaped glasses and heart-shaped candy box.

Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 17 - Try Something New!

Happy 2019, fellow crafters!

To ring in the New Year our first Designer Challenge has a theme of NEW! This challenge centers on trying out a new technique or a new style or a new purchase. The team has created fabulous inspiration as always.

For my card and video I combined three "new" things - a NEW die assembly idea for the Frame Pull Pop-up to convert it into a waterfall card, a NEW (to me) stamp set from Visible Image of the Cheshire Cat, and some brand NEW cutting pads, which I'm sure will please those of you who cringe constantly seeing the well-used ones in the videos every month.

In my defense - I am like everyone else - I use cutting pads until they break.

And then I keep the broken pieces because they work so well for small dies. 

I may have a problem.

Anywhoooooo - here's the video.

This is a postcard-style card measuring A2-size (4.25" x 5.5"). To color the Cheshire Cat I stamped it with Ranger Archival black ink onto white cardstock and then used Prismacolor pencils in these shades - Pinks (PC993, PC994, PC1014) and then PC1018 for the inner ears. Purples (PC932, PC956, PC1008). Yellows (PC1011,PC1003) and White PC938. I copied the packaging image as best I could, although I am the first to admit that my coloring skills could benefit from some practice and professional instruction!

Pull the tab to flip to the next set of panels. In this one, the greeting begins as the cat fades. The bird and hearts are dies that come included in the Frame Pull set. I cut them from black cardstock and colored with the same pencils, leaving a black edge to make them tie in better with the stamped images.

Keep pulling to reveal the third scene. Now the cat is just a head, the bird has turned around (in keeping with the greeting) and the rest of the greeting is revealed.

One last pull to reveal the final scene. The cat is now just a floating face spouting his signature phrase: "We're all Mad Here!" I meant to use a purple colored pencil between the nose and the eye, where I left a little bridge of paper while fussy cutting. I figured it would disguise my cheat. But then I forgot to do it! (We're all mad here!)

For the back of the card I added a panel of white cardstock. The "welcome" word from Word Set 7 is inlaid into the white panel, but would look just as good layered on top.
