Winter 2018 Spinner Square Pop-up Assembly Video

ACK! In good news, the new Winter 2018 dies start shipping out TOMORROW! Store orders have already been shipped, so you will see these dies showing up in your favorite local and online stores any day now. In bad news . . . I still have assembly videos to complete!

Today's assembly video is for the Spinner Square Pop-up. This die has no theme and will work for any occasion. There are so many possibilities with this one! Watch the video tutorial:

I decided to style the Spinner Square with some of the new tropical dies for a fun "hello" card. The card is a standard A2 card - 5.5" x 4.25" when closed and will mail for a single stamp in an A2 envelope.

SeaSpinnerClosed

When the card opens the shark will spin down from behind the square to say "hello"! The Spinner Square makes cards that people will want to open/close/open/close!

And now . . . back to more videos! Thanks for watching!

Winter 2018 Cake Pop-up Die Assembly Video

Happy Tuesday!

I'm plugging along on making assembly videos for the Winter 2018 Die Collection, which starts shipping this week.

This new Cake die sports a classy hexagon shape, and thus the folds at the side of the cake which are necessary for it to fold flat become part of the design. It also includes scalloped trim pieces, a bride and groom and mirror-image candles. Optional accessory dies include a large script Happy Birthday, a set of Cake Trims and a Numbers set.

Learn the assembly of this die by watching this video:

I decided to use this assembly video as an opportunity to make a special birthday card for my Mom who turns 70 this year.

Cake70Both

The front of the card is just a simple lead-in to the magic inside. There are two candle dies in the set, so it didn't take long to get a whole line of them to decorate the card's front. The oval and heart came from the Katherine Label Pop-up. This card measures 5.5" wide by 4.25" tall when closed (standard A2).

Cake70Front

As the card opens the cake starts to pop-up.

Cake70Partial

Inside I've used the Happy Birthday die set above the cake, the Numbers set on top of the cake, and the Katherine Label for a place to sign. The patterned paper is Authentique "Infused" from my stash.

Let's look closer at the six interactive dies in this release.

Cake Pop-up - this impressive 3-tier cake is designed for easy assembly and fits in any card A2 or larger. Included in the set are scalloped trim pieces, candles and a bride and groom. Add-on sets include Cake Trims, Happy Birthday and Numbers.

Cake

Coffee Cup Pop-up - with this pop-up coffee cup you can really impress! It includes built-in tabs to hold a standard-size gift card (optional) making it the perfect choice for teacher and thank-you gifts. Add the Coffee Charms for an excellent coordinating set.

CoffeeCup

Castle Pop-up - there are so many ways to decorate this castle. Obviously it will make great birthday cards for "Little Princess" or "Little Knight/Prince" but also for Kings and Queens. How about sand castles? Disney, Hogwarts, Game of Thrones, Queen of Hearts, Haunted castles  . . . so many possibilities! Decorator sets include Happily Ever After, Princess and Mermaid, Word Set 5 - Royalty and Knight and Dragon.

Castle

Palm Tree Pop-up - this clever and versatile pop-up palm tree works great in either a side fold or top fold card. Assembly is a breeze and the included hammock can be strung between trees for impressive and oh-so-relaxing cards. Add-on sets include the Tropical Scene, Sea Animals and Princess and Mermaid.

PalmTree

Spinner Square Pop-up - I have a feeling that this one is going to be a "go-to" die because it's such a fun mechanism but completely generic, so you can decorate it for any theme. An arm behind the pop-up will spin out as the card is opened for maximum "wow" effect.

SpinnerSquare

Fancy Label Accordion - spaced out in future releases you'll be seeing some of my best-sellers from my licensing days get a refresh and re-release. The Fancy Label Accordion is one such best-seller. I've kept the size identical to the previously-licensed version so that older frame edges will still fit. The only changes I made were to the decorator dies. Definitely consider the Fancy Flourish Frames as a great add-on set.

This is a SNEAK PEEK blog post, so you won't be able to order these dies from our website until February 1, 2018. However, we are taking store pre-orders starting today, so if you have a local store in your area, please encourage them to log into their KarenBurniston.com wholesale account and order this new release. It's so important that we support our local stores whenever possible.

I am plugging away on assembly videos and will be uploading them over the next two weeks as I complete them. The Design Team has been making AMAZING cards with the dies and they are free to start posting their cards on their blogs today, so definitely check out those blogs (there's a clickable list in the sidebar at left) and I also suggest "liking" our Facebook Page.

Hopefully there's something for everyone in this latest release.

Valentines Washi Tape Tree Pop-up Card

For this week's Paper Pros challenge the theme was set by Frances Byrne as "Tag, you're it!" and we were all instructed to incorporate a tag element into our cards.

I'd been wanting to make a Valentines version of my December challenge card, the Ribbon Tree, but with washi tape instead of ribbon. I found the perfect tube of crafting tape at Michaels a while back and have been trying to carve out the time to make the card that's been rattling around in my head.

For the tag element, I decided to turn the card into a window card with a tag-shaped vellum-frosted window that would allow the pretty washi tapes to be visible in the closed position and then stand up into a Valentine's tree as the card opens.

WashiTree

WashiTapeTreeBoth

My card measures 4" x 4.5" in the closed position. It's just big enough to hide the Christmas Tree Pop-up when closed. I used the Tag Book Pop-up for the window, frame, greeting tag, paper clip and hearts. The front decoration is just a piece of patterned paper from my stash, beads strung on twine and wrapped around the ribbon knot, and die cut hearts from washi tape. The collapsed tree is visible through the vellum.

WashiTapeTreeFront

As the card is opened the tree starts to stand up. I used a very lightweight white cardstock (60#) for the tree so that I could add the strips of washi tape before die cutting, making it very easy to construct. Instead of the star I used hearts for the tree topper.

WashiTapeTreePartial

The card's interior is the same patterned paper, kept very simple to let the tree have all the attention.

WashiTapeTreeOpenTo balance the window on the left side of the card I added the same tag shape to the right side and stamped it with a greeting from an older Stampin' Up! set called Lovely Amazing You, using my Misti to position the stamp perfectly. The paper clip is a die included in the Tag Book set.

Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 05 - Birthday Banners!

Happy 2018 everyone!

It's our first Designer Challenge of the new year and I chose a suitably celebratory theme: Birthday Banners. The idea is to make a birthday card incorporating banners, bunting, pennants, or flags. The team rocked the challenge (as usual) with their clever ideas for strung decor.

For my project and video, I wanted to show an idea for using the Tag Book Pop-up a little differently by turning the pop-up squares and tags into open frames that would then highlight a scene on the big tags in the background. This allowed me to use the pop-ups primarily for hanging banners, although I also floated the "Happy Birthday" greeting. Here's the video tutorial:

I chose lots of bright saturated colors for my card, in keeping with the cheerful Birthday Banners theme. It's a costume party, where the guests chose their costumes, which are attached to wire "sticks". The clouds are made using white Nuvo crystal drops and the grass is made using the Nature Edges die set.

TBCP_Front

When open, you can see the party scene along the back tags, framed by the pop-up. I used the Cat and Dog, Woodland Animals and Tiny Accessories 1 to make the party guests and their costumes. The banners come included in the Tag Book Pop-up set.

TBCP_Open

To float the title I attached the words from Word Set 2 to transparency pieces that are attached behind the openings to create the illusion of floating words.

Helen Cryer is the queen of bunting so this challenge was just perfect for her masterful skills. I love the explosion of banners in this fun Katherine Label Pop-up card.

Kelly Booth is a master of coloring and it really shows in how she shaded the frosting on her scrumptious cupcakes. I love the fun whimsy of this Cupcake Pop-up birthday card with Tag Book banners decorating the background.

KB_CupcakeBanners

Fran Sabad made this floral explosion Tag Book card with bees, banners and blossoms and it's absolutely lovely. What a happy card!

Frances Byrne used the perfect mix of dies, stamps and papers for this cheerful birthday card using the Katherine Label Pop-up. The banners work so well with the diagonal stripes.

Shelly Hickox created this pretty invitation to a British Bake-off themed birthday party she's hosting for a friend. I love how she created the word "bake" for her banners by cutting apart the words in the birthday set.

Karen Aicken made this love-inspired card with a clever combination of dies. I love her use of the banners along the front of the House die's platform. And the heart tree is divine!

Summer Hills-Painter took a couple of challenges off to make a huge move from the east coast to the west coast. She's settled in and unpacked her craft supplies and wow is she back with a bang! Check out this absolutely adorable pirate-themed Tag Book project.

SHP_PirateTagBook

As a bonus, Kelly Booth made a second Birthday Banners project featuring the Charm Accordion and her amazing coloring skills. I just love the way she created the background. The Charm Accordion is such a great generic die to showcase stamps, as Kelly has done beautifully here!

Well I think this has been an excellent kick-off to another year of pop-ups! In fact, the team is particularly excited to start showing off their projects made with our Winter 2018 Release, scheduled to start shipping on February 1st. Stay tuned for sneak peeks and videos in two weeks. We'll also be back next month, on February 7, 2018, with our next Designer Challenge, featuring brand new dies, and we are royally excited about it!

Here's to a crafty 2018!
