Pop it Ups Card Class (Scrapp'n Savvy version)

Finishing up my Texas Teaching Tour will be Scrapp'n Savvy this Friday, August 29, 2014 for two class sessions. Since I already taught the House Pivot Card at this store I've substituted a new card using the Evergreen Pivot Card for a spooky Halloween card. The inspiration for this design came from two members of my Designer Challenge team, Donna Wright and Karen Aicken. 

Here's what you should bring to class:

• Scissors
• Adhesives! Adhesives! Adhesives!
• Tape Runner
• Strong 0.25" tape (red line tacky or Scor tape)
• Mini glue dots (these are the kind that are flat, sometimes called "snot dots")
• Pop dots (highly recommend black pop-dots so they won't show behind the spooky tree)
• Liquid glue able to be placed in fine areas (I love my Fineline bottle filled with Scotch Quick-Dry glue)
• Sanding Block (I will also have some to share)
• Paper Piercer 
• Crop-a-Dile or Big Bite (something to punch a hole and set a standard eyelet)
• Optional: Xyron X for small pieces
• Optional: Brayer to mash down frame edges
• Optional: Inks to ink edges
• Recommended: Detail tweezers for placing small items
• Recommended: Detail scissors for little cuts
• Recommended: Smart phone or camera to take photos of samples

Sketch style Garden Bench/Poppy card

Recently I saw a piece of ceramic art by Katharine Morling and I was blown away by the look of her pieces, which incorporate black line art onto 3D sculpted everyday shapes.

It inspired me to try this look with my dies to create a pop-up card. All you'll need to replicate this look are some dies, white cardstock and a black pen.

I started with an A2 card but discovered after adding Poppy to the bench that I needed some extra height to the card to hide Poppy in the closed position. I solved the problem with some clouds placed at the top to become a decorative edge/Poppy hider.

It's really quite fun to cut absolutely everything from white cardstock and then just trace/doodle the details as desired. Since I was creating a scene using the Garden Bench, I decided to incorporate some of the pieces from the new ECD Wheelbarrow die by Els van de Burgt. I also used the All Seasons Tree, which comes with the clouds, leaves and flowers, and the Outdoor Edges die for the grass. Poppy the Owl is wearing the hat and glasses from the Props 1 die set. For the card front, I embossed with the Trendy Tiles 1 embossing folder and then traced around the pattern. I used a black gel pen, medium, to do all the detail work on this card.

Karen Burniston Pop it Ups Designer Challenge - Characters!

Today I'm blogging on the Elizabeth Craft Designs blog with the August Designer Challenge, which is to use any of the three Character Dies (plus Props 1) for a project of any type. Make sure you click over to the ECD blog to see all the amazing projects by the Designer Challenge Team.

For my project I am teaching how to use the new Spiral Circle Pull Card die for a fun card featuring Poppy the Owl, Props 1 and the All Seasons Tree dies. (clickable supply links at the end of this post) 

Here is the video tutorial. The first part shows the basics of using the SCPC die, the middle part shows some of the decorated samples by the DC team and the third part shows how to make this specific card.

 

For this card I cut the spiral from a transparency so the heart tree is visible in the closed position.

Open the card and the spiral expands, lifting the hearts into the air and revealing additional hearts behind them. Poppy the Owl also flips over, revealing a second Poppy for inside the card and exposing the greeting block.

My thought is that this would make a great back-to-school card for a child.

Karen Burniston Pop it Ups Designer Challenge - Christmas in July

Last month the Designer Challenge was to use Pop it Ups for Christmas (or other winter holiday) cards. All of the projects can be found on the Elizabeth Craft Designs blog here.

16th Birthday Cards for Karl and Emma

Really?! I mean, REALLY?!!! 

How did my twins get to be sixteen?

In a couple of weeks they will start their Junior year of high school.

*gulp*

Emma is currently much into Marvel and the Avengers, so for her card I decided to use the new Lorna Label Pop it Ups die along with Chilly the Penguin, dressed as Captain America:

I also used the Katie Stars Frame Edges, including the little stars that drop out of the edges, and the Outdoor Edges to make the wavy edge. After stamping the birthday greeting I used one of the decorator dies from the Fancy Accordion to cut it into a fun label shape. (Supply links at the end of the post)

For Karl's card I made an homage to video games and music - his two favorite things.

Once again I used the Lorna Label Pop it Ups die and embellished with Hoppy the Frog and the glasses from Props1. I made the headphones by cutting two black eye sockets from the Hoppy die and then shaping them into a headphone shape and hand cutting a U-shaped connector. I used twine for the cord and a print-out of an iPad photo.

John's mother is in town visiting and gave the kids SIXTEEN $5 bills each! That was quite a treat and they grew more and more giddy as they kept counting. She also took a photo of the four of us before we all went out for celebratory dinner. Once again, I'm not sure how this was Wednesday...

When I'm pretty sure this was Tuesday...
