On Facebook this morning I received this challenge from my cousin Jessica:
I challenge you to use Whiskers to create Grumpy Cat!
I immediately replied "Challenge accepted!" and stopped working on new die designs for the much more important task of meeting the challenge.
I chose to make a Valentines card and used the Crate Paper "Fourteen" collection from my stash. A tag that said "Sweetest Valentine" worked perfectly for the greeting. I only had to cover "Sweetest" with red cardstock, add the die cut letters for "GRUMPY" and then die cut the tag into the stitched Lorna Label shape. I used a paper piercer to scratch and drag through the label and then added the paw print from Props 4 with some hand cut claws. The background is the Damask Embossing Folder.
When the card is opened the Lorna Label pops up along with Grumpy Whiskers and her message to the world on Valentines Day. I've had this particular Funny Bones stamp since last summer and have been waiting for the perfect excuse to use it. (And someone with a good sense of humor to receive it!)
I let the patterned paper do all of the decorating for me, only adding some die cut red hearts from the Rectangle Accordion, X's and O's from the Clock & Gears, and the mouse that comes with Whiskers.
I Googled a photo of Grumpy Cat to be able to style Whiskers to match. I cut the shadow layer from white cardstock and the detail layer from black cardstock. The detail layer provided the lines to define the tail and legs, the centers of the ears and the nose/mouth. I snipped the smiley mouth into two pieces and flipped them to make the frown. I used the eyes that come with Whiskers but spun the hole to the top where the eyelids (a second set of eyes cut into lids) would cover them. I used the ovals that fall out of the Props 4 paw print for the black pupils. I used my Copics to shade Whiskers, added a cork collar decorated with glitter dot studs (an idea I borrowed from Kelly Booth!) and white whiskers.
